The Çeşme Peninsula — 80 km west of İzmir — is one of Turkey’s most desirable summer destinations: a place where the Aegean is warm and clear, the winds are perfect for windsurfing (Alaçatı is among the world’s top windsurfing destinations), and the pace of life slows to a perfect Aegean rhythm.
The peninsula combines thermal beaches, a historic castle town, a renowned culinary scene and the extraordinary village of Alaçatı — a former Greek settlement whose stone houses, bougainvillea-draped courtyards and wind-beaten windmills have been transformed into Turkey’s most stylish boutique destination.

Alaçatı
Alaçatıis a former Greek settlement 8 km from Çeşme town — its stone houses, narrow cobblestone streets, bougainvillea-covered courtyards and hilltop windmills (the town had 11) have made it Turkey’s most celebrated boutique destination. The main street (Kemalpaşa Caddesi) is lined with boutique hotels, art galleries, wine bars and organic restaurants.
The Alaçatı Herb Festival(April) celebrates the peninsula’s tradition of foraging. September’s Alaçatı Wind Festival draws thousands for its windsurfing competitions in the bay.
Çeşme Castle
The Çeşme Kalesi is a Genoese castle built in the 14th century and expanded by the Ottomans after 1455. The castle museum covers the extraordinary 1770 Battle of Çeşme, where the Russian fleet destroyed the Ottoman navy — one of the most decisive naval battles of the 18th century. The castle overlooks the harbour and Greek island of Chios (3 km away, visible on clear days).
Ilıca Beach and thermal springs
Ilıca, 4 km from Çeşme town, is famous for its thermal springs that emerge directly on the beach and at shallow offshore platforms — you can float in warm (43°C) thermal water while looking out at the Aegean. The sandy beach is one of the best on the peninsula.
Windsurfing and water sports
Alaçatı Bayis ranked among the world’s top 10 windsurfing destinations — consistent Meltemi winds (June–September), flat-water conditions and a well-established school infrastructure make it ideal for all levels. Kitesurfing, SUP and sailing are also popular. Several international windsurfing championships are held here each year.
Other beaches
Beyond Ilıca, the peninsula has excellent beaches: Boyalık (a long sandy beach with calm water), Altınkum (golden sand, family-friendly), Pırlanta Plajı (quiet cove with clear water) and the more remote coves around Ildırı (ancient Erythrai). The ferry from Çeşme harbour to the Greek island of Chios takes 45 minutes.
