Gümüşhane sits at the junction of the Pontic mountain range and the Harşit River valley — one of the deepest gorge systems in the Black Sea region. The province receives relatively little international tourism despite having three genuinely exceptional natural attractions, all within an hour of the provincial capital.
The province is also historically significant as a Byzantine and Ottoman mining region: the ruins of the old silver-mining settlement are a ghost town of considerable scale, slowly being excavated and interpreted for visitors.

Karaca Cave
Karaca Cave(Karaca Mağarası), 18 km south of Gümüşhane city, is Turkey’s largest and most spectacular stalactite cave open to visitors. The accessible gallery extends 600 m into the limestone mountain; the interior temperature is a constant 14°C year-round. The cave is remarkable for the scale of its formations — stalactites, stalagmites, cave columns and the rare “cave coral” (aragonite crystals). The entrance is at 1,900 m altitude; the surrounding landscape of alpine meadows and limestone karst is itself worth the detour.
Tomara Waterfall
Tomara Waterfall (Tomara Şelalesi), 40 km south of the city, is the tallest waterfall in the Black Sea region at 46 m — a single-drop falls into a forested canyon. The access path leads through beech and oak forest; the falls are most powerful in spring snowmelt (April–May) and early summer. The surrounding canyon (Kürtün Vadisi) is also notable for its kayaking potential (rapids below the falls) and the picturesque Kürtün Lake reservoir.
Zigana Mountain Pass
The Zigana Pass(2,032 m), on the Trabzon-Gümüşhane road, is one of the Pontic range’s main crossings — a landscape that changes dramatically within 30 km from Trabzon’s subtropical Black Sea coast to snow-covered alpine plateau. The pass is blocked by snow October to May; in summer the alpine meadows (yaylas) above the pass are carpeted with wildflowers. Zigana ski resort operates in winter with modest facilities but reliable deep powder.
Gümüşhane Old City (Silver Mining Ruins)
The old Gümüşhane settlement — the Ottoman silver-mining town — was abandoned after a flood redirected the Harşit River and modern infrastructure bypassed the gorge location. The ruins of churches, mosques, mills, konaks and mine tunnels spread across a steep hillside above the river. The Byzantine-era Satala fortress (on the Artvin road, 50 km north) and Armenian church ruins add further archaeological depth to the province.

Gümüşhane
3Fly to Trabzon Airport (1.5 hrs from Istanbul, frequent flights) and drive 115 km south to Gümüşhane city (1.5 hrs over the Zigana Pass — this road is closed in winter). Alternatively, fly to Erzurum and drive 2 hrs west. Gümüşhane itself does not have an airport.
June–September for all sites (Karaca Cave, Tomara, Zigana yayla walks). The Zigana Pass road opens in late May/early June. Spring (May) is dramatic for Tomara Falls at peak flow. Winter closes the Trabzon route but Erzurum access remains open; the Zigana ski area operates December–April.
Yes — Karaca Cave is genuinely outstanding for stalactite caves. The scale and variety of formations exceed most accessible caves in Turkey. It's easily combined with Tomara Waterfall (40 km) and Zigana Pass in a single day trip from Trabzon or as a Trabzon-to-Erzurum road trip stop.
