The Best Places to Visit in Nevşehir

Nevşehir province is Cappadocia — an ancient volcanic landscape of fairy chimneys, Byzantine cave churches, underground cities that sheltered thousands, and one of the world’s most spectacular hot air balloon destinations.

7 min read

Cappadocia’s landscape was shaped by three ancient volcanoes — Erciyes, Hasan and Güllüdağ — whose eruptions over millions of years deposited layers of soft tufa rock. Wind and rain sculpted this into the extraordinary pillars, cones and “fairy chimneys” that define the region. Early Christians carved the rock into an entire civilisation: churches, monasteries, homes and underground refuges.

The best base towns are Göreme (closest to the Open Air Museum), Ürgüp (more upmarket) and Uçhisar (elevated views). All are within 10–20 minutes of each other.

Göreme Open Air Museum

The Göreme Open Air Museum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site containing dozens of rock-cut churches decorated with exceptional Byzantine frescoes from the 10th–12th centuries. The Karanlık Kilise (Dark Church) has the finest and best-preserved frescoes in Cappadocia.

Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı underground cities

Derinkuyu extends 85 metres underground across 18 levels — a self-contained underground city where early Christians sheltered from Byzantine-Arab raids in the 7th–10th centuries. It housed up to 20,000 people with ventilation shafts, wells, wine cellars, stables and churches.

Kaymaklı (8 levels, 40 m deep) is closer to Nevşehir and less crowded. Both are extraordinary underground worlds.

Hot air ballooning

Sunrise hot air balloon flights over the Göreme valley — drifting between fairy chimneys as the light turns golden — are one of the world’s great travel experiences. Dozens of operators launch from April to October. Book well in advance for peak season.

Ürgüp and the wine villages

Ürgüpis Cappadocia’s most sophisticated base — boutique cave hotels in restored stone mansions, excellent local wine from ancient volcanic vineyards, and cobbled streets lined with galleries and restaurants.

The villages of Mustafapaşa and Ortahisar each have their own rock castle, cave churches and the quiet beauty of Cappadocian village life.

3 days is the minimum to see Göreme, one underground city, a balloon flight and the main valleys. 4–5 days allows you to explore Ürgüp, Avanos and the more remote sites.

April–June and September–October are ideal — mild temperatures, green landscapes and good balloon flying conditions. Winters can be very cold but the snow-covered fairy chimneys are beautiful.

The sunrise balloon flight is genuinely one of the world's great experiences — expensive but worth it for anyone with the budget. Book directly with a licensed operator, not a hotel middleman.
