Adıyaman

Gateway to Mount Nemrut — the UNESCO colossal stone heads of the Commagene kingdom at 2,150 m — and the ancient cities of Perre and Arsameia on the Euphrates.

City guide

Adıyaman is the main gateway province for Mount Nemrut — the 2,150-metre summit where the Commagene king Antiochus I built his extraordinary tomb-sanctuary in the 1st century BCE, surrounded by colossal stone statues of himself and the gods. The UNESCO World Heritage Site is best visited at sunrise or sunset for its legendary light.

The province also has the Atatürk Dam — one of Turkey's largest — creating a vast reservoir on the Euphrates that has become a water-sports and tourism destination, alongside the ancient Commagene capital of Arsameia and the rock reliefs of Karakuş.

What Adıyaman is known for

Mount Nemrut's stone heads are the reason most visitors come — the tumulus mound and its east and west terraces of colossal seated figures are remarkable in any light. Karakuş is a subsidiary Commagene monument of carved columns and stone eagles; Arsameia has relief carvings and a tunnel. Tours from Adıyaman or Kahta village reach the summit.
