Ağrı

The province of Turkey's highest mountain — Ağrı Dağı (Ararat, 5,137 m) and the spectacular Ottoman-Kurdish İshak Paşa Palace perched on a cliff above the Iranian border.

City guide

Ağrı province is dominated by its eponymous mountain — Ağrı Dağı (Mount Ararat), at 5,137 metres Turkey's highest and one of the world's most recognisable peaks, associated with Noah's Ark in Islamic and Biblical tradition. The summit is the goal of serious mountaineers who apply for annual guided ascent permits.

Near the town of Doğubayazıt, İshak Paşa Palace is one of the most dramatic buildings in Turkey — an 18th-century Ottoman-Kurdish saray perched on a cliff ledge above a volcanic plain, with carved stone facades, a mosque, tomb and multiple courtyards.
