Çanakkale guards the Dardanelles — the narrow strait dividing Europe from Asia, and the site of some of history's most consequential battles. The ancient city of Troy (Hisarlık) lies just outside town, and across the water the Gallipoli Peninsula holds the most visited WWI memorial landscape in the world.
The city itself is a lively university town with a vibrant waterfront, and from here the Aegean coast begins: the ancient Greek city of Assos, the Ida (Kazdağı) mountains and the olive-grove hinterland.
