Denizli's world claim to fame is Pamukkale — the 'Cotton Castle' — a hillside of brilliant white calcium travertine terraces filled with warm thermal water, cascading down a cliff edge above the Aegean plain. Atop the terraces, the ruined city of Hierapolis was a thriving Roman spa city and retains one of the best-preserved ancient theatres in Turkey.
The UNESCO World Heritage site attracts millions of visitors each year, but the province has more to offer: the ancient city of Laodikeia, the wine villages of the Çal plateau and the dramatic Kaklik Cave — an underground Pamukkale.
