Fethiye

Turquoise lagoons, paragliding off Babadağ, Lycian rock tombs and the gateway to the blue cruise — the most beautiful stretch of the Turkish Mediterranean.

City guide

Fethiye sits on a sheltered bay on Turkey's southwestern coast, where the Aegean gives way to the Mediterranean. Just along the shore lies Ölüdeniz — the "Blue Lagoon" — a sweep of impossibly turquoise water against a pebble spit that is one of the most photographed beaches in the world.

This is the heart of the ancient Lycian region: rock-cut tombs are carved into the cliffs above the town, and the long-distance Lycian Way footpath threads along the coast. Above it all rises Babadağ, the launch point for some of the planet's most scenic tandem paragliding.

What Fethiye is known for

Ölüdeniz and its Blue Lagoon nature reserve are the headline, but the area is rich in variety: tandem paragliders drift down from Babadağ onto the beach, the secluded Butterfly Valley is reached only by boat or a steep trail, and the dramatic Saklıkent Gorge cuts deep into the mountains inland. Above Fethiye town, Lycian rock tombs and a ruined castle look out over the harbour.

  • Ölüdeniz Blue Lagoon and Belcekız beach.
  • Tandem paragliding from Babadağ (1,700 m+).
  • Butterfly Valley and the Lycian Way coastal trail.
  • Saklıkent Gorge and the rock tombs of ancient Telmessos.

Boats, islands and the blue cruise

Fethiye is a principal departure point for the "blue cruise" along the Lycian coast toward Olympos and Antalya, sailing past sunken cities, pine-backed coves and the famous "12 Islands" of the bay. Day boats from the marina make a relaxed alternative, stopping to swim at Cleopatra's bath and other sheltered anchorages.

Inland, mountain villages such as Kayaköy — an evocative abandoned Greek settlement — and the cool plateau of the Lycian highlands offer a complete change of pace from the coast.

Getting around

The nearest airport is Dalaman, about an hour away, with domestic and seasonal international flights. Minibuses (dolmuş) link Fethiye with Ölüdeniz, Kayaköy and the surrounding beaches frequently in season; a car helps for reaching gorges and quieter coves.

On the platform

Fethiye is joining Istanbul Hub as we expand into a Turkey-wide city intelligence platform. This guide is the launch foundation — live transport data, an interactive map and deeper neighborhood content roll out city by city, on the same architecture that powers Istanbul today.
