Kocaeli (İzmit) is Turkey's most industrialised province — the home of the country's largest automotive factories and a petrochemical hub — but its forested hills hide surprises: the Kartepe ski resort, the tranquil Sapanca Lake and a rich Roman history as Nicomedia, once capital of the eastern Roman Empire.
For travellers between Istanbul and the east, Kocaeli is a natural stop: the Gulf of İzmit offers a scenic backdrop, and the surrounding hills provide hiking and winter sports just an hour from Istanbul.
