Manisa rises beneath the dramatic cliffs of Mount Spil (ancient Sipylos), one of the most distinctive profiles in the Aegean. An important Ottoman city, it retains the Muradiye Mosque complex built by Suleiman the Magnificent for his son, and a historic covered bazaar.
The ancient city of Sardis — once the capital of Lydia, home to King Croesus and his legendary gold — lies just outside Salihli in the province, while the Mesir Paste Festival (celebrated since 1539) is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list.
