Marmaris occupies one of the most sheltered natural harbours on the Turkish coast, where pine-forested mountains drop almost to the water's edge. Its large marina has made it one of the country's premier sailing centres and a favourite departure point for blue cruises along the Datça and Hisarönü peninsulas.
The town blends a long palm-lined waterfront and a small castle in the old quarter with a famously energetic nightlife strip, while just outside it lie quieter resorts and coves like İçmeler and Turunç.

What Marmaris is known for
Marmaris is built around its bay and marina: yachts and gulets fill the harbour, day boats run to surrounding coves, and the seafront promenade leads to the small Ottoman castle and old bazaar. The town is well known for its nightlife along Bar Street, balanced by the calmer family resorts of İçmeler and Turunç a short hop around the coast.

Day trips and the wider coast
Marmaris makes a convenient base for exploring the southwest. Boat tours visit the bays of the Gulf of Gökova, while road trips reach the laid-back town of Datça and the ruins of ancient Knidos at the peninsula's tip. To the east, the river delta and loggerhead-turtle beach of Dalyan and the rock tombs of Kaunos are a popular full-day excursion.
Getting around
Dalaman Airport is around 1.5 hours away by road. Within the bay, frequent minibuses (dolmuş) and water taxis connect Marmaris with İçmeler and Turunç, and boats handle most coastal sightseeing; a car is useful for reaching Datça and Dalyan.
