Şanlıurfa (Urfa) is one of the most layered cities in the world — a place where religious geography, ancient history and contemporary tradition interweave. The cave of the Prophet Abraham — venerated by Muslims, Christians and Jews — sits in the city centre beside the Balıklıgöl sacred fish pool, a pond of carp that Islamic tradition says God created when Abraham was thrown into flames by Nimrod.
Just outside the city, Göbeklitepe is the most remarkable archaeological discovery of the 20th century: T-shaped monolithic pillars carved with reliefs of animals, assembled 12,000 years ago by hunter-gatherers, rewriting the history of human civilisation. It is the world's oldest known temple complex.

What Şanlıurfa is known for
Göbeklitepe — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2018 — challenges everything we thought we knew about early human society: organised monumental architecture predates farming and writing by millennia. In the city, the old bazaar (çarşı) is one of the most traditional in Turkey, with coppersmiths, spice merchants and traditional coffeehouse culture. Harran, 44 km south, is an ancient city of beehive houses and the world's first university.

- Balıklıgöl & Abraham's Cave — Islamic sacred site.
- Şanlıurfa Grand Bazaar — traditional Mesopotamian marketplace.
