Sinop is the oldest continuously inhabited city on the Black Sea coast — a natural harbour on a double-sided peninsula that has been strategic since Milesian colonists arrived in the 7th century BCE. It is Turkey's northernmost point, the birthplace of the Cynic philosopher Diogenes, and a city of extraordinary character: ancient walls, a Byzantine-Genoese castle and a gorgeous seafront.
The surrounding coastline has some of the Black Sea's cleanest beaches and the unique Hamsilos fjord — a narrow saltwater inlet ringed by cliffs, accessible only by boat.
