Şırnak is one of Turkey's most remote provinces, occupying the southeastern corner where Turkey meets Syria and Iraq. Cudi Mountain (Cudi Dağı) — at 2,089 metres — is associated in Islamic tradition with Noah's Ark (an alternative to Mount Ararat), and its slopes have yielded ancient artefacts in several archaeological surveys.
Cizre, on the Tigris River, is an ancient city with a 500-year-old bridge and a minaret inscribed with Syriac script. The province's landscape — limestone plateaus cut by river gorges — has a harsh, elemental character.
